So you’ve decided to take the plunge and purchase an engagement ring! Exciting times! The problem is, you have no idea what size the ring needs to be.

It’s always a tricky situation. Do you ask her if she knows her ring size, or do you find another way to do it?

Here’s the good news: Don Roberto Jewelers are here to help!

Our ring sizing guide can be printed so you can lay a ring on top of the circles to help find an approximate size.

This is the easiest way to determine ring size, but this can sometimes be a challenge if your bride-to-be only wears middle, index, or pinky finger rings.

Here are some other ways to find her engagement ring size without her figuring out what you are doing.

1. ‘Borrow’ her Jewelry (Just for a Minute)

If your girlfriend already wears a ring on her ring finger (even if it’s on the right hand), you can use that as a guide.

Wait until she takes it off and then lay it on a piece of paper, tracing the inside and outside with pencil (don’t use a pen as ink can get on the ring). You can then compare that to sizing guide to bring it into the store when you are ready to purchase.

Another method is to slip the ring over one of your fingers and use a pen to mark where it stops. Just don’t let her catch you trying on her jewelry or you’ll have some explaining to do!

2. Ask her Friend, Sister or Mom for Help

When it’s time to ask her to marry you, you can enlist her best friend, sister or mom to help you. Of course, they will be excited and (as long as they can keep a secret) they will be a great help.

It’s possible that her mom or bestie already knows her size. Another tactic is to ask one of her married or engaged friends to play the “Let’s see how my ring looks on you” game.

Once it’s on her finger, she can make note of your girlfriend’s size compared to her own. Not only will this get you the information you need, but it will also be a lot of fun for her friends, sister or Mom.

3. Compare your Hand with Hers

Next time you’re holding hands pay closer attention to your fingers and hers. Does one of your fingers match in size to her ring finger? While it’s not the most accurate approach, but it can get you a pretty close estimate. Just make sure she doesn’t catch you sneaking a look!

4. Take a guess, or Go a Little Larger

The average woman’s ring finger is a size six. It might be a little rough, but maybe you can assess whether or not your girlfriend’s hands are average, or on the larger or smaller side. Then make the call. When in doubt, go for a larger size engagement ring, it’s far easier to size down than up.

Remember to take your time! Even though you might be anxious to ask, by trying to rush to find her size, you can give away the surprise!

Also, if you bring up ‘ring size’ in conversation over time, she might not notice. Just make sure you’ve given yourself enough buffer time to do what you need to do and to plan the perfect engagement ring for the proposal.
